For many years, the word “Vastu” in the Indian home conjured up something mystical, and sometimes even frightening. I remember my aunt frantically shifting a heavy teak cupboard in her drawing room because the local vastu shastra woman had hinted it was “blocking her luck”, or a neighbor ruining a perfectly nice kitchen wall in South Delhi because the stove happened to be facing the “wrong” direction. Today, however, I see a beautiful revolution as I stroll through the new architectural salons of Gurgaon or the posh homes of Noida. A fresh generation of women architects and interior designers, the “Zen Modernists”, have begun to unravel all the superstitions, and unbundle Vastu Shastra as the Science of Energy. I am discovering that this is no longer about hanging lemons and preserving chilies. It is about optimization of air flow, manipulation of pathways of light, and the mentality of the modern Indian woman.
The NCR context: Safe haven in a concrete jungle
Living in Delhi-NCR is all about extremes. With the mercury soaring to 48 degree Celsius in the summer, seasonal smog forcing us to stay indoors, and the new economy transacting in the high-octane level of stress, our homes can no longer be a showcase of new hotel arrivals, but must become recovery suites for our psyches.
