Persistent Bloating and Fatigue Could Be Early Signs of Ovarian Cancer: Expert

Dr. Parnamita Bhattacharya, gynecologist – CK Birla Hospitals, CMRI

“One of the biggest misconceptions about ovarian cancer is that it always presents with severe pain or dramatic symptoms. In reality, the early signs are often very subtle and easily mistaken for routine digestive or lifestyle-related issues. Many women experience persistent bloating, mild abdominal discomfort, feeling full quickly, acidity-like symptoms, or changes in bowel habits long before any severe pain appears. Because these symptoms seem common and non-specific, they are frequently ignored or self-treated, leading to delays in diagnosis.

What makes ovarian cancer particularly challenging is that there is no widely recommended routine screening test for the general population. This means awareness of symptoms becomes extremely important. Unfortunately, many women believe that if the pain is not intense, the condition cannot be serious. That assumption can be dangerous.

Another important fact is that symptoms are usually persistent rather than occasional. If bloating, pelvic discomfort, unexplained fatigue, or digestive disturbances continue for several weeks despite lifestyle or dietary changes, they should not be normalised. Early evaluation can make a significant difference because ovarian cancer detected in earlier stages has better treatment outcomes.

Women often prioritise family and work responsibilities over their own health, which further contributes to delayed medical consultation. On World Ovarian Cancer Day, it is important to spread the message that not every serious illness announces itself loudly. Sometimes, the body gives subtle but persistent warnings—and listening to them early can save lives.”
