05th October,2024: Leading creative education institution, Pearl Academy, in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), is set to present an impactful showcase at the prestigious Lakmē Fashion Week X FDCI. This collaboration offers a groundbreaking platform for budding fashion designers to explore the intersection of femininity, safety, and empowerment.
On the concluding day of Lakmē Fashion Week X FDCI, scheduled for October 13, 2024, Pearl Academy will unveil an innovative iteration of its renowned event, ‘First Cut.’ This platform has been instrumental in showcasing the debut collections of Pearl Academy’s final-year fashion design students, providing them with a transformative stage to introduce their creative endeavours to the global design community.
With each iteration, ‘First Cut’ has consistently pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion shows, telling compelling stories that resonate with contemporary issues. Previous editions have addressed urgent topics such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Turkey earthquake, and the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This year, the theme “Chained by My Femininity” delves into the dichotomy between traditional femininity and the pressing need for safety in today’s society.
The concept is rooted in the alarming realities faced by women, often compelled to suppress their femininity for protection. The show unfolds in three acts:
The Weight of Softness showcases the burdens of being a woman, where the greatest weight comes from aspects that are exclusively feminine. It discusses how all things associated with femininity can become burdensome for women, as their softness—portrayed by these elements—also makes them targets for various forms of violence.
The Armor of Masculinity explores the encroachment of patriarchy on femininity under the guise of providing protection, while simultaneously being the predator. As masculine elements dominate a woman’s life on the streets and at work, we see how women must don armour and become actual warriors just to navigate society safely.
Reclaiming Femininity is about women taking back their feminine power. The final act unfolds with a deconstruction of patriarchy and the suppression it exercises over women. Here, we witness how the masculine elements that restrict her movement and inhibit her from being #FreeToBe ultimately submit to her power, accentuating rather than hindering her experience of life.
This collection is a poignant response to the rising tide of violence against women, exemplified by recent tragedies, including the Kolkata rape case. It aims to raise awareness and ignite a movement for change, empowering women to voice their experiences and assert their rights.
Pearl Academy will also launch a book dedicated to the saree, celebrating its significance as a cultural and personal symbol for women.
“The theme ‘Chained by My Femininity’ pays homage to the profound strength of women, from revered goddesses to everyday champions. This show celebrates today’s women, honoring their extraordinary power while encouraging us to reflect on the challenges they face. By fostering awareness and appreciation for their experiences, we aim to inspire a deeper understanding of the potential and resilience of women in our society. At Pearl Academy, we are committed to nurturing this spirit of creativity in our students, empowering them to craft impactful narratives that uplift and advocate for all women,” says Aditi Srivastava, President, Pearl Academy.
”In an industry where innovation and creativity are the driving forces, it is crucial to empower the younger generation with opportunities to lead the way. Our collaboration with Pearl Academy reflects our shared commitment to nurturing and elevating emerging talent. By providing these budding designers a platform at Lakmē Fashion Week X FDCI, we are not only showcasing their fresh, bold ideas but also contributing to the future of fashion. We are proud to witness the remarkable creativity and vision that Pearl Academy students bring to the table, and we look forward to their continued success in shaping the global fashion landscape” says Sunil Sethi, Chairman, Fashion Design Council of India.
