Paras Health Kanpur Restores Normal Heart Rhythm in Patient Using Advanced Cardiac Procedure

Kanpur, Mar 21: Paras Health Kanpur has successfully treated a patient suffering from recurrent episodes of sudden abnormal heartbeats using advanced Electrophysiology Study (EPS) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), a specialised procedure that helps doctors identify abnormal electrical signals in the heart and eliminate them to restore a normal rhythm. The procedure was performed by the hospital’s cardiology team led by Dr. Sripad Vasant Khairnar, Consultant – Cardiology, helping stabilise the patient’s heart rhythm. The patient, Mrs. Prema Devi, had been experiencing repeated episodes of rapid heartbeat and was treated successfully at the hospital.

The condition became serious when the patient began experiencing sudden episodes where the heart rate would increase from a normal level of around 70 beats per minute to nearly 200 beats per minute, leading to palpitations, dizziness, and discomfort. Doctors diagnosed the condition as Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), also known as Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia (PSVT)—a disorder in which abnormal electrical signals cause the heart to beat unusually fast. While medicines may help control symptoms temporarily, recurrent cases often require specialised procedures to correct the underlying electrical disturbance in the heart.

Dr. Sripad Vasant Khairnar, Consultant – Cardiology, Paras Health Kanpur, said,

“Heart rhythm disorders such as supraventricular tachycardia occur when abnormal electrical pathways in the heart trigger sudden episodes of very rapid heartbeat. Patients may feel palpitations, dizziness, breathlessness, or discomfort, and in some cases these episodes can occur repeatedly despite medication. An Electrophysiology Study allows us to precisely map the electrical signals within the heart and identify the pathway responsible for the abnormal rhythm. Radiofrequency Ablation then helps eliminate this faulty pathway using controlled energy. Once treated, many patients experience long-term relief and are able to return to normal daily activities without frequent episodes of rapid heartbeat. These rhythm disturbances can also occur suddenly and may affect individuals even during routine activities such as walking, exercising, or while sleeping, making timely diagnosis and treatment extremely important.”

Shri Rajat Bajaj, Facility Director, Paras Health Kanpur, said,

“Access to specialised cardiac procedures has traditionally been limited to large metropolitan centres. The availability of Electrophysiology Study and Radiofrequency Ablation at Paras Health Kanpur means that patients with complex heart rhythm disorders can now receive advanced diagnosis and treatment closer to home. This not only reduces the need for long-distance travel but also allows patients to receive timely intervention when symptoms become severe.”

Electrophysiology Study and Radiofrequency Ablation are minimally invasive procedures used to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms. During the procedure, doctors study the electrical activity of the heart to identify the source of irregular signals. In this case, the cardiology team first conducted an Electrophysiology Study to identify the abnormal electrical pathway responsible for the irregular heartbeat. Once the faulty pathway was located, it was treated using Radiofrequency Ablation, a procedure that uses controlled radiofrequency energy to eliminate the abnormal signals and restore a normal heart rhythm.

With the availability of these specialised services, Paras Health Kanpur continues to expand its advanced cardiology capabilities, ensuring patients in Kanpur and surrounding regions can access specialised treatment for heart rhythm disorders closer to home.
